A tribute worthy of New Orleans’ biggest musical heroes took place in “The Big Easy” on Friday. A day following the death of Dr. John (real name, Mac Rebennack) on Thursday, thousands of fans, well-wishers, and even family members of the legendary funk-rock pianist took to the streets for a second line tribute parade.

The second line began in front of Kermit’s Mother-in-Law Lounge after initially being announced by local renowned jazz trumpet player Kermit Ruffins. The parade was kickstarted at the beginning with a performance of Dr. John’s “Such A Night”, with the music being led by another trumpeter in James “Satchmo of the Ghetto” Andrews.

From there, the parade only gathered musical momentum and plenty more participants, as the total number of marchers looked to have reached well into the thousands by the early part of the afternoon. It has also been reported that Dr. John’s own granddaughter, Stephanie O’Quin, was also one of the well-wishers marching in the celebratory parade.
