Primavera Sound Is Coming To Los Angeles In 2020

Long-running Barcelona, Spain music festival Primavera Sound has announced that they will go global next year with the addition of a new event in L.A. Primavera Sound Los Angeles is set to take place on September 19th and 20th, 2020 at L.A. State Historic Park, and will be co-produced by Live Nation.

The announcement of the new U.S. edition of the festival comes as 2019 edition of the flagship Barcelona event wraps up on Sunday. The addition of the L.A. event will coincide with the festival’s 20th anniversary.

As Gabi Ruiz, one of Primavera Sound’s directors, said in a statement, “We have been thinking about Los Angeles for many years now, and the celebration of our 20th anniversary felt like the perfect timing for the decision of crossing overseas. Our goal is to bring the Primavera Sound spirit and vibe to cities with a similar feel: creative, colorful and welcoming. And with this, to give something new to the city, to show a new side and new possibilities to be built and harvested together. So it’s a dream to finally say: yes, it had to be Los Angeles.”

“Primavera Sound is an inspiring tastemaker festival and we’re thrilled to be working with their Barcelona team in bringing it to Los Angeles next year. The festival is a forward-thinking exploration of music and culture, and it will offer a unique and powerful experience to connect with fans,” added Live Nation’s Brian Smith.

While Primavera Sound has existed in some form in Barcelona since the early 90s, the first larger, multi-stage event took place in 2001. The festival has grown steadily from there. Today, it attracts hundreds of thousands of attendees each year with its demographically and stylistically diverse lineups.

Past artist lineups at Primavera Sound have included Pixies, Arcade Fire, Queens of the Stone Age, The National, Nine Inch Nails, Kendrick Lamar, Neil Young, Sonic Youth, Portishead, Pet Shop Boys, Pavement, Echo & The Bunnymen, Lou Reed, My Bloody Valentine, El-P, Pulp, Patti Smith, James Blake, Cat Power, Public Enemy, Grinderman, Franz Ferdinand, Television, Devo, Enrique Morente, The White Stripes, LCD Soundsystem, Tindersticks, PJ Harvey, Shellac, Dinosaur Jr., New Order, Fuck Buttons, Swans, Melvins, Psychic TV, Spiritualized, The Cure, Bon Iver, La Buena Vida, Death Cab For Cutie, Iggy & The Stooges, De La Soul, Marianne Faithfull, Mazzy Star, Blur, Wu-Tang Clan, Phoenix, Radiohead, Animal Collective, Sigur Rós, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Tame Impala, and many more.

The new L.A. festival is part of a big 2020 push for the festival. In addition to the existing events in Barcelona and Porto, Portugal, the newly announced one in L.A., and their Primavera Weekend in Benidorm, Spain this November, the Primavera Sound website lists a mysterious fifth event. While the dates and location are all listed as “???,” the blurred-out image with which they’re paired looks a whole lot like London, England. For more on that, we’ll have to wait and see.
