The Avett Brothers have announced their next studio album, to be titled Closer Than Together. The new album is due out this fall on October 4th via Republic Records.
The forthcoming album will be the folk-rock band’s first studio effort since 2016’s True Sadness. The band shared a lengthy statement about their latest project to their social media accounts to go along with the album’s announcement on Thursday.
“As our records tend to be, the newest – entitled ‘Closer Than Together’ – is certainly led by the personal narrative of our own lives,” the lengthy mission statement reads. “In this way, there is no massive departure from our continued artistic language. This chapter, however, perhaps in part of our age or our time, wanders inevitably into hallways both social and political. There are songs developed through and inspired by not only what we see inside our homes and our travels, but by the connections we are blessed to nourish.”

The band also shared the lead single from the album in the form of radio-friendly track, “High Steppin’”. The song opens up with the punchy sound of a retro synth line before the lyrics come in to bring the tune up to cruising altitude. While “High Steppin’” is filled with its fair share of modern pop production elements, its core makeup sticks to the band’s more traditional Americana and folk-rock sound. The song was reportedly written originally as “a straight-ahead country song,” before the rest of the band began to deconstruct and experiment with its creative potential in the studio.
