Soulive was back at Brooklyn Bowl in New York City to close out the first of their two weekends as part of their Bowlive VIII residency on Saturday. While other venues around Manhattan were forced to delay and cancel performances due to a mass NYC blackout, the electricity at Brooklyn Bowl flowed freely as the funk trio comprised of guitarist Eric Krasno, keyboardist Neal Evans, and drummer Alan Evans was joined on Saturday by jazz fusion guitar wizard John Scofield.

After kicking off the performance with fan-favorite “So Live”, the band moved into “Cannonball”, another high-powered original. After an energetic reading of “Bubble”, Krasno led the trio through an incredible, ethereal rendition of classic Jimi Hendrix instrumental “Third Stone From The Sun”. Another thrilling instrumental cover was up next with an extended rendition of Stevie Ray Vaughan‘s “Lenny” before the trio closed their first frame with their own “Tuesday Night Squad”.
Krasno’s “favorite guitarist of all time,” John Scofield, joined him and the Evans brothers as Soulive took the stage for their second set of the night. Later in the show, Scofield would return Krasno’s sentiment, reminiscing to the crowd about discovering Soulive in Cambridge, MA some 20 years ago and falling in love with them on the spot.
The quartet got things started with Scofield’s “Kelpers” before moving into a thrilling rendition of The Allman Brothers Band‘s “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed”, Krasno and Scofield both adding their own individual flair to the song’s classic dual guitar part.
From there, Soulive led into another Scofield favorite, “Hottentot”, before welcoming vocalist Avery Sunshine to the stage. After taking a few stunned moments to express her gratitude about being onstage with “her favorite band” and the legendary Scofield, Sunshine commanded lead vocals on a cover of “I Don’t Need No Doctor” (popularized by Ray Charles), which Alan Evans explained was one of the group’s favorite songs. Finally, all five musicians returned to the stage for an encore performance of The Impressions‘ “We’re A Winner”.
