On Tuesday night, Tedeschi Trucks Band continued their annual multi-band Wheels of Soul summer tour with Blackberry Smoke and Shovels and Rope with a performance at Raleigh, NC’s Coastal Credit Union Music Park at Walnut Creek.
After the opening sets, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, and company took the stage on the warm summer night and dove into a rendition of Elton John‘s “Border Song”, a new setlist staple on this young summer tour. The steady swagger of “Do I Look Worried” was up next, followed by “Signs, High Times”, the de facto title track from their 2018 album, Signs.
From there, Revelator ballad “Until You Remember” made its first appearance of 2019, followed by the frequent pairing of Sleepy John Estes‘ “Leaving Trunk” and Rahsaan Roland Kirk‘s “Volunteered Slavery”, giving vocalist Mike Mattison a chance to step to center stage. Let Me Get By favorite “Laugh About It” kept the party going, Trucks laying into his Gibson with characteristic intensity.
A go-to cover of Derek and the Dominos‘ “Keep On Growing” was up next, giving Derek a chance to channel Eric Clapton before steering the set into two of the band’s most popular songs in the beautiful “Midnight In Harlem” and the bouncing “Part of Me”. Finally, the band closed the set on a strong note with a wailing rendition of the blues standard, “How Blue Can You Get?”, and a lively “I Want More”, with the latter featuring an extended drum and bass solo.
When the band returned for their encore, Susan welcomed Blackberry Smoke’s Charlie Starr to sing lead and trade guitar solos on a rendition of the old reliable sit-in vehicle, Charles Segar‘s “Key To The Highway”. The song’s “I’m going back to the border” lyric served as a satisfying callback to the “Border Song” that opened the show. After building to a blistering peak, the Tedeschi Trucks/Blackberry Smoke connection continued as the band (plus Starr) was joined by Blackberry Smoke drummer Brit Turner for a show-closing cover of Leon Russell‘s “Stranger In A Strange Land”, with Starr once again manning lead vocals.
