The tragedy on Sunday, which immediately brings to mind the mass shooting at Las Vegas’ Route 91 Harvest Festival in October 2017, was reportedly perpetrated by a white male in his 30s. The alleged Gilroy shooter was shot and killed by police officers responding on the scene.

The Northern California event located roughly 30 miles southeast of San Jose is a food-themed which reportedly attracts more than 100,000 visitors every year to the small city of Gilroy. Although primarily a food-themed event, this year’s festival featured a mix of musical performers including headliner Colbie Caillat.

According to CNN, “members of the band Tin Man, who were starting an encore when the shooting happened, told CNN the gunman was carrying a rifle and wearing a green shirt with a gray handkerchief tied around his neck. They also said that he sprayed gunfire from side to side with no direct target, creating pandemonium among the crowd.”

Former FBI supervisory special agent Josh Campbell, told CNN the shooter was “prepared, as demonstrated by the fact that he cut through the fence to avoid security and metal detectors.” Authorities are still working to determine a motive for the attack.
