Mike Gordon continued his winter tour at The Danforth Music Hall in Toronto on Saturday night. The Phish bassist and his band debuted a pair of originals as well as a Coldplay cover in Canada.
The concert commenced with two songs from Gordon’s 2017 album OGOGO in “Let’s Go” and “Whirlwind.” Mike then delivered the first cover of the night with Fiona Apple’s “Sleep To Dream,” the opening track from Apple’s landmark 1996 debut album Tidal. The Fiona cover then led into “Yarmouth Road” from 2014’s Overstep and a song that first found its way into the Phish rotation. Next up, percussionist Craig Myers unveiled a new tune dubbed “Midigoni,” featuring a light-up version of African instrument, the ngoni. The reveals continued with a new song penned by Mike and guitarist Scott Murawski entitled “Back In The Bubble.” Gordon returned to OGOGO — and showcased that classic Cactus humor — with “Go Away” to close out the first frame.
Mike kicked off the second set with Tower Of Power’s “You Strike My Main Nerve” before peeling off a sizeable “Peel” (Overstep) sandwich that included “Stealing Jamaica” before returning to “Peel.” “Unknown Phoebe” followed ahead of a debut of Coldplay’s “All I Can Think About Is You” from the UK pop band’s 2017 Kaleidoscope EP. The Phish rarity “Spock’s Brain” came next. While 2019 did see two Phish performances of the song, in Mexico and at the ridiculous Alpine closer, the Vermont quartet has only played the song 10 times. Mike debuted the song on March 1, 2014 in New York and it has remained in the Gordo rotation ever since. Next, Oversteps’ “Tiny Little World” ahead of the set closer — a cover of Rancid’s “Ruby Soho.”
