Mike Gordon Welcomes Horns In Cincinnati

169

In what’s becoming a tradition, Phish bassist Mike Gordon was joined by a horn section during a tour stop in Cincinnati. Gordon, drummer John Kimock, percussionist Craig Myers, guitarist Scott Murawski and keyboardist Robert Walter teamed with trumpeter Michael “Mad Dog” Mavridoglou, saxophonist Ben Walkenhauer and trombonist Jason Branscum for three songs to end the first set at the 20th Century Theatre on Thursday.

The quintet opened with “Equilibrium” and then went to the Phish repertoire for “Spock’s Brain” before pairing Murawski’s “Put Down The Phone” with Mike and Scott’s “Normal Phoebe.” Next, the three-piece horn section emerged to add to originals “I Am Random” and “Steps” as well as a cover of Tower Of Power’s “You Strike My Main Nerve” to end the frame. Mavridoglou and Walkenhauer were part of a four-piece horn section that joined Gordon and company during an October 2017 tour stop in Cincinnati.

Last night’s second set got underway with a “Face” that bled into “Stealing Jamaica,” a sequence that lasted nearly 20 minutes. Myers’ “Angatta” was up next and was followed by a take on Fiona Apple’s “Sleep To Dream.” The band closed out the set with “Crazy Sometimes” and “Sughn Never Sets.” For the encore, Murawski led the quintet through the tour’s first “Gimme Some Lovin’.”
