Rising Appalachia Performs NPR ‘Tiny Desk Concert’

Rising Appalachia stopped by Bob Boilen’s desk to perform for NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert. Sisters Leah Song and Chloe Smith along with their band offered up a pair of songs from their 2019 album Leylines as well as a tune from their 2015 LP Wider Circles.

The sisters start off the session with Leah on traditional Irish drum the bodhrán and Chloe on banjo for Leylines’ “Resilient.” The rest of Rising Appalachia — consisting of percussionist Biko Casini and multi-instrumentalists David Brown (baritone guitar), Duncan Wickel (cello, fiddle) and Arouna Diarra (ngoni) — join in on Wider Circles’ “Medicine.” Leah, Chloe and company close out the session with “an old boot-stompin’ Appalachian folk tune” they learned from their “mama” called “Cuckoo.” Check out the entire performance below:
