Tedeschi Trucks Band Begins Chicago Theatre 2020 Residency

Tedeschi Trucks Band kicked off their fifth annual residency at The Chicago Theatre with performances at the famed Chicago venue on Friday and Saturday. The shows contained rarities, choice covers and an acoustic portion during the second night.

The residency began with a bust out of the rarely performed “Come See About Me.” The first set also featured the second performance of the recently debuted “Hear Me,” covers of Titus Turner’s “Sticks And Stones” and The Allman Brothers Band’s “Don’t Keep Me Wonderin’,” and a closing version of “Let Me Get By.”

Friday’s second set started with “I’m Gonna Be There,” followed by back-to-back tunes from Derek & The Dominoes’ Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs in the form of “Key to the Highway” and “Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?” Set two also presented staple originals “Part of Me,” “Just As Strange,” “Learn How to Love” and “Get What You Deserve,” Willie Nelson’s “Somebody Pick Up My Pieces” and an elongated take on Billy Taylor’s “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free,” as well as the closing “I Want More.” Night one’s encore was a cover of “Let’s Go Get Stoned.”

Saturday’s first set focused on TTB favorites such as “Laugh About It,” “High & Mighty,” “Don’t Know What It Means,” “Don’t Let Me Slide” and “Don’t Drift Away,” along with regularly played covers “The Letter” and “The Sky Is Crying.” The opening set was capped with “Idle Wind.”

Saturday’s mostly acoustic start to the second set consisted of “Calling Out To You,” “When Will I Begin,” Elmore James’ “Done Somebody Wrong,” the Layla track “I Am Yours” and “Meet Me At The Bottom.” The fully electric finish was made up of “Leaving Trunk,” “Shame,” “Midnight In Harlem” and “How Blue Can You Get?”

Guitarists Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks led their band mates through a cover of Funkadelic “Good to Your Earhole,” which was played once before on the same night “Hear Me” debuted. “Bound For Glory” capped the opening weekend of TTB’s Chicago Theatre residency. The band performs again at the historic theatre on Friday, January 24 and Saturday, January 25.
