Trey Anastasio Band continued their winter tour at the House Of Blues in Houston on Saturday night. Unfortunately, the band had to play without a percussionist Cyro Baptista who was suffering from the flu.
TAB sans Cyro kicked things off with “Burn That Bridge” from Anastasio’s work on the musical Hands On A Hardbody. The Cabo Wabo classic “Cayman Review” followed ahead of a nearly 12-minute, tone-setting “Gotta Jibboo.” The instrumental “Mozambique” came next ahead of “Love Is What We Are,” “Simple Twist Up Dave” and “Shine.” Up next, the Phish tune “46 Days” before the crowd-pleasing “Camel Walk,” penned by former Phish guitarist Jeff Holdsworth. “Set Your Soul Free” marked the penultimate song of the first set ahead of closer “First Tube.”
“Sigma Oasis” got the second set underway followed by Phish songs “Ocelot and “No Men In No Man’s Land.” Trey introduced Natalie “Chainsaw” Cressman before the trombonist led the band on a cover of Ana Tijoux’s “1977.” Next up, “Valentine” and Ghosts Of The Forest tune “About To Run.” TAB’s a cappella version of “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” — featuring Cressman, trumpet player Jennifer Hartswick and saxophonist James Casey — came ahead of “Pigtail.” A well-built “Sand” stretched to nearly 11 minutes before the second set closer “Tuesday.”
Trey reemerged with his acoustic guitar for solo versions of “Strange Design” — after which he talked about how he was born in Fort Worth, Texas and acknowledged that there are “four Texases” as well as how he wrote “Strange Design” when his wife Sue was nine months pregnant with their daughter Eliza — and “Brian And Robert.” Trey prefaces the banter after the latter by joking “everything I’m about to say is complete bullshit” before attempting to recall a story about a Phish show in Houston that may or may not have taken place before some hilarious interactions with the crowd. Hartswick, Cressman and Casey then joined Anastasio for another a cappella tune, this time around Ghosts Of The Forest track “Brief Time” before welcoming the entire band to close out the evening with “Push On ‘Til The Day.”
