Widespread Panic Continues Panic En La Playa 2020 In Mexico

113

Widespread Panic‘s 2020 Panic En La Playa destination event continued on Sunday with the band’s third of four shows at the Hard Rock Hotel in Riviera Maya, Mexico. While the sextet didn’t bring out any guests, they performed their first electric “Let’s Get The Show On The Road” in well over a year, their first “Coconut” since last year’s event, split “Holden Oversoul” and more.

The band came out of the gates with the old school run of “Makes Sense To Me,” “Can’t Get High” and “You Should Be Glad.” A cover of Curtis Mayfield’s “Pusherman” was next along with Earth To America track “Second Skin,” beloved instrumental “B of D,” pretty ballad “Jack” and aforementioned versions of “Let’s Get The Show On The Road” and “Coconut.” The last electric “LGTSOTR” went down at Red Rocks on June 24, 2018; while “Coconut” saw action for just the third time since 2017 to close the frame.

Panic overcame technical difficulties that marred the start of their second set on Sunday night in Mexico. The band did however fit a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Cream Puff War” within “Holden Oversoul,” marking the first split “Holden” since October 27, 2018. Next, “Impossible” bled into “Good Morning Schoolgirl.” Then, “Imitation Leather Shoes” and “Gimme” led into another “Good People” into “Dark Bar” into “Good People” sequence. All 34 performances of “Dark Bar” have come in the middle of “Good People.” An expansive “Surprise Valley” followed containing the evening’s “Drums” segment before the pairing of JJ Cale’s “Ride Me High” and Jerry Joseph’s “North” brought the set to its conclusion. The penultimate night of Panic En La Playa 2020 ended with an encore featuring two more covers: “For What It’s Worth” by Buffalo Springfield and Tom Petty’s “Honey Bee.”
