Lucinda Williams announced a new album, Good Souls Better Angels, due out on April 24 via Highway 20/Thirty Tigers. Williams also shared the single, “Man Without A Soul.”

The follow up to 2014’s Down Where The Spirit Meets The Bone, 2015’s The Ghosts Of Highway 20 and the 2017 reimagining of her 1992 album Sweet Old World titled This Sweet Old World, Good Souls Better Angels sees Williams setting aside the more personal nature of her previous albums and focusing on wider socio-political issues.

“Because of all this crap that’s going on, it’s on the top of everybody’s minds – it’s all anybody talks about: Basically, the world’s falling apart – it’s like the apocalypse,” Williams said in a statement. “That’s where that Old Testament stuff comes from. It’s different from my other albums in that there aren’t the story songs about my childhood and all. It feels exciting.”

The record features Williams’ longtime band members drummer Butch Norton, bassist David Sutton and guitarist Stuart Mathis. To produce the album, Willimas worked with her husband Tom Overby, who is also credited as co-writer on much of the material, as well as longtime collaborator Ray Kennedy — who engineered Williams’ 1998 landmark record Car Wheels On A Gravel Road.

“Ray was getting these great sounds. He has all this vintage equipment. It really rocks… a lot of stuff that is blues-rocky, edgy, grungy, and political,” Williams told Rolling Stone Country, who premiered “Man Without A Soul.” Listen to it below:
