Merkel’s Bavarian Ally Says Timetable for Succession Is Too Slow(Bloomberg) — German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Bavarian allies questioned her timetable to find a successor by the end of the year, urging a faster resolution to the political crisis.A day after Merkel’s heir apparent, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, announced she would no longer pursue the top job, an official with the Bavarian Christian Social Union said the chancellor’s party must move forward its decision on who replaces her.“Parties need to be led, so the timeframe that was put forward yesterday was in my view no timeframe that has a chance of being implemented,” the CSU’s parliamentary leader in Berlin, Alexander Dobrindt, told reporters in Berlin.Dobrindt is not alone in his criticism. CSU party leader Markus Soeder and the premier of the state of Hesse, Volker Bouffier, a member of Merkel’s Christian Democrats, also want the succession process to be expedited. To contact the reporters on this story: Arne Delfs in Berlin at [email protected];Patrick Donahue in Berlin at [email protected] contact the editors responsible for this story: Ben Sills at [email protected], Flavia Krause-JacksonFor more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.comSubscribe now to stay ahead with the most trusted business news source.©2020 Bloomberg L.P.
