Phil Lesh & Friends Perform With Trey Anastasio At Beacon Theatre On This Date In 2006

123

On February 12, 2006 Phil Lesh & Friends played the second concert of a five-night stand at the Beacon Theatre in New York City, surprising the assembled crowd with guitarist Trey Anastasio who joined the band’s entire show. The Phish guitarist replaced Barry Sless for only one of the five nights in NYC and Lesh later released an official soundboard recording of the show.

With Phil Lesh on bass, Anastasio played alongside guitarist Larry Campbell, drummer Jeff Sipe, keyboardist Rob Barraco and vocalist Joan Osborne. The first set featured many Dead classics as well as Anastasio and Osborne leading the first Phil & Friends performance of The Band’s “Up On Cripple Creek” as well as the debut of Bob Dylan’s “Buckets Of Rain.” More classic Dead tunes came in set two, as well as a cover of Ryan Adams’ “What Sin Replaces Love,” and The Rolling Stones’ “Gimmie Shelter.” The encore featured Anastasio leading the ensemble through Phish’s “Wolfman’s Brother” before photographer Danny Clinch hopped on stage to add harmonica to “Midnight Hour.”
