Trey Anastasio Band Dusts Off Dire Straits, CSN & Billy Preston Covers In New Orleans

135

The Trey Anastasio Band featuring Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio closed out their 2020 winter tour on Saturday night in New Orleans. One day after fitting a number of bust outs and tour debuts into their Friday show at The Civic Theatre, the band followed a similar script last night by playing rare Dire Straits, CSN and Billy Preston covers at the same venue.

Saturday’s show began with “Cayman Review,” the first full band “Party Time” in TAB history and the return of Crosby Stills & Nash’s “49 Bye-Byes” for the first time since May 25, 2017. A run of tour staples came next in “Alive Again,” “Sometime After Sunset,” “Burn That Bridge,” “The Landlady,” “Undermind,” “Love Is What We Are” and “Shade.” Anastasio then dug into the repertoire for “A Case Of Ice & Snow,” a song from his 70 Volt Parade days that was last played by the Trey Anastasio Trio on April 26, 2018 and last played by TAB on April 30, 2017. Next up was just the band’s second cover of Billy Preston’s “Will It Go Round In Circles” since 2006 and a set-closing “Push On ‘Til The Day.”

Last night’s second set got underway with a 25-minute pairing of “Night Speaks To A Woman” and “Alaska” before “Burlap Sack & Pumps” led into “About To Run.” TAB still had one more huge surprise in store as “Sultans Of Swing” ended the frame after “Last Tube,” “Rise/Come Together” and “Tuesday.” Anastasio’s troupe hadn’t played the Dire Straits cover since January 23, 2013 and the guitarist fit references to New Orleans and Saturday night into the lyrics. Trey missed a verse at first but wound up singing it later in the song. TAB ended the evening and tour with an encore of “A Life Beyond The Dream” and “First Tube.”
