Soul musician Allen Stone led his band through a performance at Bob Boilen’s desk during a set for NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concert video series. Stone and company played “American Priviledge” before presenting a string of three songs from 2019’s Building Balance LP.
Allen was joined by pianist Michael Elson and vocalists Jessica Childress, Moorea Masa and Raquel Rodriguez for the four-song performance. Stone took a moment after performing “American Priviledge” from 2015’s Radius to discuss how happy he is that the Tiny Desk Concert format is so popular. “To hear the songs really broken down and really played, it’s not pyrotechnics and LED lights and people hanging from the chandeliers,” the Washington native explained. “It’s like stripped-down and the songs played in their purity and it’s really a privilege and an honor to get to share my songs that way.”
The run of tunes from Building Balance began with “Give You Blue,” which Stone dedicated to his wife. Allen then led the ensemble through another song he wrote about his wife, “Brown Eyed Lover” and ended the performance with “Consider Me.” Watch Allen Stone’s Tiny Desk Concert performance below:
