Dave Matthews Band, who recently postponed a brief tour of Australia due to the coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak pandemic, served as the headliner for a number of stops on the 1996 H.O.R.D.E. tour. Eighty minutes worth of pro-shot video from their performance at Mud Island Amphitheatre in Memphis as part of the tour recently entered circulation for the first time and can be viewed below.
On July 18, 1996 DMB joined the H.O.R.D.E. Festival tour for the Memphis stop and 13 additional performances of the excursion following a three-week trip to Europe. Frontman Dave Matthews wore a hidden camera during some of the group’s time at Mud Island for an episode of the short-lived MTV series Bootleg. While portions of “So Much To Say” and “Too Much” from DMB’s 11-song show were aired on Bootleg, YouTuber Copperpot-OEW5 found and shared 80 minutes worth of high-quality, professionally-shot footage from the set.
The video starts with footage of the band on the side of the stage preparing to go on. DMB then takes the stage and opens with “Tripping Billies” after Matthews tells the crowd, “It’s a nice hot day but it’s cooling down a little bit so hopefully we can all fuck it up a little harder now.” Next up was “#41” which like “Tripping Billies” was on the group’s new-at-the-time Crash studio album. The focus on material from Crash continued with the pairing of “Say Goodbye” with “Two Step,” “Crash Into Me,” “So Much To Say” and “Too Much.”
It would be over 50 minutes before the Dave Matthews Band turned to a song from 1994’s Under The Table & Dreaming as they delivered a nicely extended “Jimi Thing.” The set continued with “Drive In Drive Out” off Crash and came to a close with the crowd-pleasing “Ants Marching.” While “All Along The Watchtower” was DMB’s encore, the footage of the Bob Dylan cover is missing from the video.
