Grateful Dead Releases ‘June 1976’ Box Set

This year’s Grateful Dead box set, June 1976, includes previously unreleased recordings of five concerts from the band’s first tour back after the longest hiatus of their 30-year career. June 1976 — out today via Dead.net — contains recordings made by engineer Betty Jackson-Cantor of Grateful Dead shows held at the Boston Music Hall on June 10 and 11, The Beacon Theatre in New York City on June 14 and 15 and the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, New Jersey on June 19.

“Musically, June 1976 signaled a Golden Age of harmony and prosperity for the Dead,” notes a description of the box set. “It marked an Odysseusian-like return for Mickey Hart. Donna Jean (Godchaux) was in lock-step with the sirens’ call. Jerry (Garcia) and Bob (Weir) delivered orphic delight with solo musings like ‘Mission In The Rain’ (the only tour they ever played it on), ‘The Wheel,’ and ‘Cassidy,’ emboldened by group effort.” While also available digitally, the 15-CD box set includes liner notes by Jesse Jarnow and photos by Grant Gouldon within packaging featuring artwork by Justin Helton.
