JamBase previously shared a St. Patrick’s Day Spotify Playlist, which has been slightly updated and is presented again below. Rather than pull together all of the well-known St. Patty’s Day tunes from bagpipe-blasting bands, this collection goes a bit outside of the box for a jam-scene-focused set of shamrock songs.
Jerry Garcia and David Grisman get things going with “Whiskey In The Jar” and “Dreadful Wind And Rain” from their Shady Grove album. There are also selections from Garcia’s Before The Dead days.
Grateful Dead songs are married with traditional Irish tunes via the self-titled Wake The Dead tribute album featuring Bay Area musicians Maureen Brennan, Cindy Browne, Danny Carnahan, Kevin Carr, Sylvia Herold, Paul Kotapish and Brian Rice, as well as Garcia/Grisman collaborator Joe Craven.
Irish vocalist Van Morrison can be heard on several tracks, backed by The Band at the famed The Last Waltz concert, alongside fellow Irish icons The Chieftains, joined by guitarist extraordinaire Mark Knopfler and solo on his classic ode to the Belfast street “Cypress Avenue.” The Chieftans also appear on tracks collaborating with Bon Iver, Bonnie Raitt, Joni Mitchell and more.
Elton John shows up with his own “Belfast” composition along with popular Irish group Thin Lizzy giving their take on “Dublin,” while singer-songwriter Guy Clark laments being stuck with the “Dublin Blues” and Steve Earle sings about “The Galway Girl” and with Dervish, “The Galway Shawl.” Guitarist John Mayer contributes a tender “St. Patrick’s Day” as well.
The Beatles legend John Lennon’s solo tracks “The Luck Of The Irish” and “Sunday Bloody Sunday” are present as is Paul McCartney & Wings’ “Give Ireland Back To The Irish.” Stream the updated playlist below:
