Amanda Shires continued her I So Lounging daily livestream series. The Saturday edition saw Shires and her husband Jason Isbell covering the Radiohead classic “High And Dry” as well as the blues standard “Nobody Loves You When You’re Down And Out.”
Shires kicked off the session with a “solo jam” featuring an a cappella version of her own song “Kudzu” from the 2011 album Carrying Lightning. Isbell and guitarist Seth Plemmons — whose wife Kelly Garcia Plemmons co-hots the show — then joined in for Radiohead’s “High And Dry,” on which Shires nailed the “high” and “dry” parts of the chorus. The song appears on Radiohead’s landmark 1995 album The Bends.
After chatting a bit, the trio got into the blues classic “Nobody Loves You When You’re Down And Out,” which saw Shires adding some fiddle and harmony over Isbell’s lead vocals. While the song has been a standard for nearly a century, the legendary blues singer Bessie Smith popularized the song — originally written by Jimmy Cox — in the late 1920s and 1930s. Over the years, a number of notable artists have covered it including Count Basie, Lead Belly, Nina Simone and John Lennon. Eric Clapton’s Derek And The Dominos included the tune, featuring Duane Allman, on their album Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs.
Shires, Isbell and Plemmons would close out the session with “Zeyk’s Blues,” a nod to the Plemmons’ dog. Check out the entire performance below:
