John Medeski, Pat Sansone & Others Perform Mellotron Variations ‘Tiny Desk Concert’

Medeski Martin & Wood’s John Medeski and Wilco’s Pat Sansone joined Robby Grant and Jonathan Kirkscey for a Mellotron Variations Tiny Desk Concert. NPR Music shared video of the all-Mellotron session.

NPR’s Bob Boilen noted that the 1960 Mellotron played by Medeski marked the first Tiny Desk Concert to feature an original model of the keyboard. Space restrictions at Boilen’s desk allowed for only one of the large vintage keyboards — about the size of a Hammond organ — so Grant, Sansone and Kirkscey played modern, smaller Mellotron models.

The session featured the four keyboardists playing three songs from their 2019 self-titled album, “Agent Cha Cha,” “Dulcimer Bill” and “Pulsar.” Watch below:
