Less Than Face Productions shared pro-shot video of Mavis Staples covering Buffalo Springfield’s protest anthem, “For What It’s Worth.” The footage comes from the legendary singer’s performance during FreshGrass 2019 at MASSMoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts.
“For What’s It’s Worth” appears on Buffalo Springfield’s 1966 self-titled debut. Buffalo Springfield launched the careers of both Stephen Stills and Neil Young. While the song — with its iconic ‘60s guitar harmonics and protest imagery — is often considered an anti-war tune, Stills drew inspiration from protests around the Sunset Strip curfews which took place in Los Angeles in 1966 shortly after Buffalo Springfield became the house band at one of The Strip’s most famous venues, the Whisky a Go Go.
Staples has covered the song for some time now with a rendition appearing on her 2008 live album, Hope At The Hideout. Watch her perform “For What It’s Worth” live from FreshGrass 2019 below:
