Norah Jones announced a new album, Pick Me Up Off The Floor, arriving on May 8th through Blue Note Records. Jones also shared the single “I’m Alive,” a collaboration with Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy along with his son drummer Spencer Tweedy.
Pick Me Up Off The Floor is Jones’ seventh studio album. Jeff Tweedy also features on the Pick Me Up Off The Floor track “Heaven Above.” Jeff resumes his collaborative role after working on Jones’ previous album, 2019’s Begin Again. “Norah’s been a great friend for a long time, Tweedy told Rolling Stone, “and she’s one of the most effortless musicians I’ve ever played with.”
Jones spoke about the upcoming LP in a statement:
Living in this country — this world — the last few years, I think there’s an underlying sense of, “Lift me up. Let’s get up out of this mess and try to figure some things out.” If there’s a darkness to this album, it’s not meant to be an impending sense of doom, it feels more like a human longing for connection. Some of the songs that are personal also apply to the larger issues we’re all facing. And some of the songs that are about very specific larger things also feel quite personal. I don’t know if I was just in a zone or if this process turned it on, but I’ve felt more creative in the last year than I ever have.
The album also features contributions from drummers Nate Smith, Dan Rieser, and Josh Adams; bassists Christopher Thomas, John Patitucci, Jesse Murphy, and Josh Lattanzi; keyboardist Pete Remm, violinist Mazz Swift, violist Ayane Kozasa, cellist Paul Wiancko, backing singers Ruby Amanfu and Sam Ashworth, percussionist Mauro Refosco, saxophonist Leon Michels and trumpet player Dave Guy as well as pedal steel from Dan Lead.
Jones previewed the album with lead single “I’m Alive” featuring Jeff and Spencer Tweedy. The tune arrived with an accompanying video. Watch it below:
