Ben Gibbard Covers Nirvana’s ‘All Apologies’ ‘Live From Home’

Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard performed Live From Home on Thursday, April 23. Gibbard delivered an all piano set that included a cover of Nirvana’s “All Apologies” as well as a debut.

Gibbard kicked off the session with Death Cab’s “Unobstructed Views” from the band’s 2011 album Codes And Keys followed by “Passenger Seat” from DCFC’s landmark 2003 LP, Transatlanticism. Ben then related a humorous story about being asked to write a song for a polar bear movie which would become “The Ice Is Getting Thinner” followed by his first cover of the performance with “Tulsa Telephone Book” from renowned country singer-songwriter Tom T. Hall.

After a Q&A session, Gibbard continued with more Death Cab material in “Binary Sea” from 2015’s Kintsugi and “What Sarah Said” from 2005’s Plans. Ben then unveiled a new tune called “Proxima B” about a planet discovered orbiting in the habitable zone of the closest star system to Earth other than the Sun called Alpha Centauri. Next, Gibbard delivered a piano version of Nirvana’s “All Apologies.” Both Gibbard and Kurt Cobain hail from the Seattle area and Ben describes the song as from one of his “favorite bands” that “needs no introduction.” After the Nirvana classic, Ben takes the time to shout out to the beneficiary of the livestream, the Seattle Artist Relief Fund, before continuing with “Blacking Out The Friction” from DCFC’s 2001 LP The Photo Album ahead of the set closer “Soul Meets Body.”
