The New York Guitar Festival will take place online this year with a series of performances using the theme Reverend Gary Davis: In Search Of The Harlem Street Singer. Each performance will take place live via the festival’s YouTube channel and can be viewed via the JamBase Livestreams Calendar at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT every day from Monday, May 4 through Friday, May 15.
Jorma Kaukonen, Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams, Bill Frisell, Larkin Poe, Fantastic Negrito and Kaia Kater are among the artists who will pay tribute to Reverend Gary Davis, a seminal figure in music history whose songs have been covered by the Grateful Dead, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and many others.
“Rev. Gary Davis is one of those curious figures in music history who should be famous, but who’s also a lot better known than you might think,” said WNYC’s John Schaefer, a station that’s “New Sounds” program will debut audio recordings of the full collection on May 4. “Listening to, and sharing, music has been a lifeline for so many people during this period of social isolation. We hope this project will spread the joy, and shine a light on the remarkable music and resilient life of Reverend Gary Davis,” added the festival’s artistic director David Spelman.
