Live At New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival Spotify Playlist

153

For 50 years, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, has been the pinnacle celebration of the music, art and culture of New Orleans. The coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic forced this year’s Jazz Fest to be canceled, with the event hoping to return to the Crescent City next year during its usual time spanning the last weekend of April through the first weekend of May.

In place of Jazz Fest 2020, archival sets are streaming via New Orleans-based radio station WWOZ’s Jazz Festing In Place program. This edition of Saturday Stream also features archival performances from past Jazz Fests, as well as recordings from late-night shows held in the “days between” weekends at the fairgrounds.

The playlist begins with the extensive Jazz Fest: The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival box set. Released last year, the collection is of Jazz Fest performances from “the years 1974 to 2016 and features key moments with celebrated artists like Trombone Shorty, Irma Thomas, Big Freedia, Professor Longhair, The Neville Brothers, Allen Toussaint (solo and in a duet with Bonnie Raitt), Dr. John, Kermit Ruffins, Terence Blanchard, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Champion Jack Dupree and Buckwheat Zydeco, among many others.”

Additional Jazz Fest recordings by Bruce Springsteen, New Orleans legend Fats Domino, Ella Fitzgerald with Stevie Wonder are also included in the playlist. Moving from the fairgrounds to late-night shows, the playlist concludes with Papa Grows Funk, The String Cheese Incident and Dragon Smoke featuring Galactic drummer Stanton Moore and bassist Robert Mercurio, keyboardist Ivan Neville and singer-songwriter Eric Lindell. JamBase also launched a series of Jazz Fest Memories featuring images taken by photographer Adam McCullough at the past 15+ fests on Instagram.
