Dave Matthews, Brandi Carlile, The String Cheese Incident & More Perform For ‘Banding Together’ Virtual Benefit Concert

124

Dave Matthews, Brandi Carlile, Nathaniel Rateliff, The String Cheese Incident and many more performed for a virtual benefit concert on Saturday. Presented by Breckenridge Brewery, Banding Together: A Concert For The Colorado Music Relief Fund helped raise money to support Colorado’s musicians and live event crews affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

The event kicked off with a stunning drone shot of an empty Red Rocks save for a lone Nathaniel Rateliff standing on the stage who offered some words about the fundraiser before performing “Time Stands” from his 2020 solo album, And It’s Still Alright. Next up, Dave Matthews offered up a song from one of Colorado’s greatest champions, John Denver, with “Take Me To Tomorrow.” The song originally appears on Denver’s 1970 album of the same name and Matthews recorded it for a 2013 tribute to Denver. Brandi Carlile then performed her song, “Looking Out,” the opening track on her 2009 album, Give Up The Ghost.

The concert continued with Michael Franti on his new tune “I Got You” and Jack Johnson with “Rodeo Clowns” from his 2003 album On And On. The Avett BrothersSeth, Scott & bassist Bob Crawford — gathered around the piano for “I And Love And You” followed by a performance from Denver’s own Todd Mohr of Big Head Todd And The Monsters atop a helipad at Denver Health surrounded by frontline healthcare workers. The concert continued with more Colorado artists in Isaac Slade on a solo piano version of The Fray’s hit “How To Save A Life” and The String Cheese Incident with a quarantine style performance of their classic, “Good Times Around The Bend.”

Marcus Mumford then offered up “When I Get My Hands On You” from his The New Basement Tapes project followed by Colorado-based band The Luminners performing the classic “Stubborn Love” from their 2012 self-titled debut album at an empty Empower Field At Mile High in Denver. Nick and Helen Foster of Boulder’s eTown then delivered a gorgeous cover of Townes Van Zandt’s “If I Needed You” ahead of their own “Right Now.” Michael Franti returned for “I’m On Your Side” ahead of the always electrifying Rodrigo y Gabriela on “Tamacun” and “Electric Soul.” After airing a bit of Marcus Mumford’s video chat with Nathaniel Rateliff, Greensky Bluegrass’ Paul Hoffman performed “In Control,” “Courage For The Road” and “Past My Prime” from high in the Rockies at the legendary Caribou Ranch near Nederland, Colorado.

Todd Mohr then continued from the helipad with The Monsters’ classic “Bittersweet” and “It’s Alright.” Up next, the “Mayor of Telluride” himself, Sam Bush on Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song.” The Grateful Dead were well represented with a conversation between former Denver Mayor, Colorado Governor, Senate candidate and banjo player John Hickenlooper and GD guitarist Bob Weir. Grace Potter then performed “Stop The Bus” and “Eachother” ahead of Colorado guitar phenom Austin Young at Denver’s Union Station followed by more from Marcus Mumford, Hick’s chat with Bobby, and The Luminneers. The concert then headed back to Red Rocks for two more tunes from Nathaniel Rateliff and more.
