Dropkick Murphys & Bruce Springsteen Perform At Empty Fenway Park

Dropkick Murphys performed a concert at an empty Fenway Park in their native Boston on Friday dubbed Streaming Outta Fenway. Bruce Springsteen virtually joined the Celtic punk band via the jumbotron for a “Fenway Double Play” performance of one of his songs and a Dropkick Murphys song toward the end of the set, which benefitted the Boston Resiliency Fund, Feeding America and Habitat for Humanity.

After showing the video for new song “Smash Shit Up” and a behind the scenes tour of Fenway, Dropkick Murphys premiered the music video for another new tune, “Mick Jones Nicked My Pudding,” before taking up their positions on the hallowed ground of Fenway’s infield, the first band ever to perform there. Decked out in Red Sox jerseys, Dropkick Murphys got the show underway with “The Boys Are Back,” the opening track to their 2013 album Signed And Sealed In Blood. The band then offered up the favorite “The State Of Massachusetts” ahead of “Captain Kelly’s Kitchen” from their landmark 2005 album The Warrior’s Code. Dropkick Murphy’s then returned to newer material with “Smash Shit Up” and after “Sunshine Highway,” delivered the B-side to “Smash Shit Up,” a cover of Scottish singer-songwriter Gerry Cinnamon’s “The Bonny.”

Dropkick Murphy’s would take it way back with their first major hit, 2004’s “Tessie,” and would also deliver “Sandlot,” “4-15-13” and “Rebels With A Cause” from their 2017 album, 11 Short Stories Of Pain & Glory. The band continued the set with favorites “Prisoner’s Song,” “The Warriors Code,” “Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ya” and “(F)lannigan’s Ball” the latter two off 2008’s The Meanest Of Times, as well as covers of the Brendan Behan-penned, oft-covered (Bob Dylan, Jeff Tweedy, The Dubliners, Chris Thile) “Auld Triangle,” Johnny Thunder’s “You Can’t Put Your Arms Around A Memory” and the Boston anthem “Dirty Water” made popular by 1960s proto-punk band The Standells.

Dropkick Murphys then welcomed Bruce Springsteen via the jumbotron, helping the band on their own “Rose Tattoo.” Bruce and Dropkick Murphys recorded a version of the song for a 2013 charity EP and Springsteen also cut a single with the group, the traditional “Peg O’ My Heart,” as per Ultimate Classic Rock. DKM singer Ken Casey then noted Bruce’s youthful appearance and after a bit of banter the “Fenway Double Play” continued with Springsteen’s, “American Land,” a tune about the immigrant experience. After Bruce departed, Dropkick Murphys launched into their most famous song, “I’m Shipping Up To Boston,” which is actually based on a Woody Guthrie lyric before closing the set with “Until The Next Time.”
