One of the inspiring components of seeing live music, in particular shows featuring improvised parts of the performance, is the singularity an expansive jam brings to the experience. Whether in the moment at the concert or later listening back to a recording, deep sequences of improvisation offer the listener an opportunity to take a sonic journey with the musicians onstage.
The JamBase 20 For 20 series previously examined 20 of the longest jams and standout improvisations that took place over the past two decades. As was stated then, long jams do not necessarily guarantee high-quality playing throughout, but extended improvising can often deliver exciting results. This edition of Saturday Stream presents a Spotify Playlist of live tracks from the past 50+ years that each cross the 20-minute threshold.
The playlist features the Grateful Dead’s 46-minute “Playing In The Band,” The Allman Brothers Band’s 45-minute “Mountain Jam” and Phish’s 40-minute “You Enjoy Myself.” Also featured are 30+ minute live recordings by Frank Zappa, Neil Young, The Velvet Underground, moe. and the Disco Biscuits. The set contains additional jam scene familiars The String Cheese Incident, Trey Anastasio Band, Umphrey’s McGee, Twiddle, Spafford, Aqueous, Goose and Greensky Bluegrass with Holly Bowling.
The collection also presents expansive live recordings by Jefferson Airplane with Crosby, Stills & Nash at Woodstock, as well as Jerry Garcia & Howard Wales and Legion Of Mary, afrobeat pioneers Fela Kuti & Egypt 80, krautrock icons CAN, jazz legend Miles Davis and rock legends Led Zeppelin. The shortest track (20:24) is Chris Forsyth with Garcia Peoples performing “Dreaming In The Non-Dream.” The longest track (49:35) is Garcia Peoples performing “One Step Behind.”
