Dixie Chicks Change Name To ‘The Chicks’ & Share New Song ‘March March’

116

Farewell The Dixie Chicks and hello The Chicks. The trio changed their name and announced the news with the caption “We want to meet this moment” on their website. Additionally, The Chicks shared a new single entitled “March March” along with an accompanying video.

As noted by Pitchfork, a recent op-ed in Variety called upon the band to re-think The Dixie Chicks moniker. “For many Black people,” wrote Variety’s Jeremy Helligar, the word “Dixie” “conjures a time and a place of bondage… This is a discussion we need to have, and they should be a part of it.” The Chicks’ name change comes after Lady Antebellum changed their name to Lady A.

On July 17, The Chicks — consisting of Natalie Maines, Martie Maguire and Emily Strayer — will release Gaslighter, their first new studio album in 14 years. “March March” is one of the songs featured on the Jack Antonoff-produced LP. The protest song comes with a video that features footage of recent protests and includes the names of Black Americans killed by police scrolling across the screen.
