Grace Potter honored the musical legacy of her current hometown of Topanga, California for Monday’s Twilight Hour livestream. Potter and her band performed songs by Buffalo Springfield, Taj Mahal, Neil Young and others with ties to the neighborhood during last night’s session.
Each week, Potter is backed by her husband, drummer Eric Valentine and bassist Alex Proctor for most of the performances included within Twilight Hour. Proctor was visiting family in Minneapolis last night, so the trio pre-recorded this week’s installment of the series.
Grace and Eric gave an introduction to the episode in which they explained it was pre-recorded and detailed the theme. The first song performed in the hour-plus Twilight Hour was a funky version of Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth.” Potter went on to speak about the history of Topanga between each song. The trio covered Spirit’s “Topanga Window” after “For What It’s Worth” and then welcomed special guest radio broadcaster Dr. Demento for a chat before offering a partial take on “Weird Al” Yankovic’s “Another One Rides The Bus” parody of “Another One Bites The Dust.” Both Spirit and Dr. Demento used to live at Potter’s current house.
Potter stuck to electric piano throughout most of the set, which continued with a beautiful rendition of Taj Mahal’s “Corinna,” before strapping on an acoustic guitar for a cover of Neil Young’s “Everybody Know This Is Nowhere.” Grace and her band ended the “Topanga” episode of Twilight Hour by performing “Going Up The Country” by Canned Heat and Ryan Bingham’s “The Weary Kind” from the Crazy Heart soundtrack.
