JamBase Celebrates 20th Anniversary At The Chapel On This Date In 2019

Twenty years of JamBase was celebrated on June 1, 2019 at The Chapel in San Francisco with a concert featuring sets from Surprise Me Mr. Davis, Big Light and Ron Artis II. Surprise Me Mr. Davis — the supergroup consisting of The Slip and Nathan Moore — were billed as the “Camp Harry All-Stars.” A trio of videos from the evening were shared as part of JamBase’s Gimme Shelter In Place video series and can be viewed below.

Hawaiian native Ron Artis II took the stage first backed by his band, The Truth. Ron showed off his songwriting skills and multi-instrumental prowess on both guitar and keys. Artis and company were joined by Brad Barr of Surprise Me Mr. Davis, The Slip and The Barr Brothers for “This Old World,” a song the band and their guest came up with earlier in the night during soundcheck. The bluesy number was a “one-and-done” affair as Ron has never played “This Old World” again.

Big Light, a band that has a long history with JamBase, was the evening’s second of three acts. The Big Light lineup that played at The Chapel featured guitarist/frontman Fred Torphy, drummer Bradly Bifulco, lead guitarist Jeremy Korpas, keyboardist Jeff Coleman and bassist Steve Adams. The quintet delivered a career-spanning set that included “Bonebreaker,” the song that brings their 2010 studio album, Animals In Bloom to a conclusion. A special moment took place when Moore emerged to join Big Light for his own “Safe & Sorry” after Nathan noted the Bay Area rockers were the first band to cover one of his songs. While the performance was a one-off for Big Light, the group did release Ships in April. The record was the band’s first since The Well Wishers in 2014.

    Gimme Shelter In Place: Big Light Performs ‘Bonebreaker’

    The JamBase archival video series ‘Gimme Shelter In Place’ continues with Big Light performing “Bonebreaker” at The Chapel in San Francisco.


Surprise Me Mr. Davis’ set at The Chapel marked the group’s first non-festival performance since 2011. Moore, Brad Barr, bassist Marc Friedman and drummer Andrew Barr focused on material written by Nathan including “Everything Must Go,” “When A Woman” and “I Hate Love.” The quartet also played a cover of The Rolling Stones‘ “19th Nervous Breakdown.” One of the improvisational highlights of the evening was SMMD’s 10+ minute “Sissyfus.” Nathan left Friedman and the Barrs on stage for the bulk of “Sissyfus,” giving attendees a chance to see The Slip jam.

    The JamBase archival video series ‘Gimme Shelter In Place’ continues with Surprise Me Mr. Davis performing “Sissyfus” at The Chapel in San Francisco.


The Slip would perform a set of their own the next night at a private party held in honor of JamBase’s 20th anniversary at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, California. The trio’s first full set since 2015 and just second of a seven-year span came after performances from Clangin’ & Bangin’, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Holly Bowling, a variation of Tea Leaf Green, the Strangefolk Duo, Jennifer Hartswick & Friends and Nathan Moore & Friends.
