Dark Star Orchestra Shares More Video From 2003 Featuring Steve Kimock

20

Grateful Dead tribute act Dark Star Orchestra rolled out professionally-shot video of their second set from a September 4, 2003 concert in Pittston, Pennsylvania. The latest installment of the band’s Saturday Sets At Six archival video series features special guest Steve Kimock and follows the premiere of the first set from the concert, which was broadcast the previous week.

The show marked the first collaboration between DSO and Steve Kimock. Steve emerged towards the middle of the first set and stuck around for all of the closing stanza. Dark Star Orchestra went with an “elective setlist” that night instead of using a setlist from Grateful Dead history. The band’s lineup at the time included founding keyboardist Scott Larned, who died in 2005, and guitarist John Kadlecik, who left DSO in 2009 to join Furthur. Bassist Kevin Rosen was also on hand in Pittston, 10 years before he parted ways with the group.

Dark Star Orchestra’s second set in Pittston was a well-jammed affair that got underway with Larned channeling Brent Mydland on The Meters’ “Hey Pocky Way.” The band and their guest then served up a lengthy run through “Shakedown Street,” which was followed by a wild sequence in which they worked “Estimated Prophet” into “Dark Star” before taking a trip to “Space” that gave way to “The Other One.” Kadlecik handled lead vocals on Bob Dylan’s “Visions Of Johanna” and then Rob Eaton belted out “Turn On Your Love Light” to end the frame.

Larned revealed DSO was out of time, so he teamed with Kadlecik, Eaton and Rosen for a mostly acapella rendition of “We Bid You Goodnight.” Watch the second set and encore below:
