A new music video is available for the Neal Casal song “Tomorrow’s Sky”, set to a montage of Casal’s photography. The song shares the title of a forthcoming coffee table book of Casal’s photos, set for release in November.
The new music video, alongside the book, comes as part of a multimedia tribute to the life and work of Neal Casal. An array of artists have participated in a tribute album to him, entitled Highway Butterfly: The Songs of Neal Casal, and director Justin Kreutzmann captured the behind-the-scenes work for a documentary film. Proceeds from each project will go to benefit the Neal Casal Music Foundation, which aims to put instruments in the hands of New York and New Jersey youths.
The song comes from Casal’s 2009 album, Roots and Wings, and finds Casal donning an acoustic guitar. Rather than the usual electric bliss with which Casal became synonymous late in his career with Circles Around The Sun and the Chris Robinson Brotherhood, “Tomorrow’s Sky” features a more tender mood and shows off Casal’s oft-overlooked lyricism. Lines like “Looking at tomorrow’s sky/Everything is still up in the air, up in the air/It might be a little while but I know I’m gonna see you somewhere/So don’t call it the end,” become all the more prescient in the wake of his passing last August.
Yet, the at-times dour nature of the lyrics is balanced out with photographs of a life well-lived. Photos of friends, family, and the general minutia of everyday life that Casal captured on his camera add a bit of levity to the “Tomorrow’s Sky” music video. Familiar faces including Eric Krasno, Casal’s Circles Around The Sun bandmates, Todd Snider, Dave Schools, Joe Russo, and more abound, reminding us of all the love he shared throughout his lifetime.
