NPR Music Shares Archival Los Lobos ‘Tiny Desk Concert’ [Watch]

NPR Music dug into its archives for a 2010 Tiny Desk Concert from Los Lobos published on Sunday. The archival performance finds the cross-cultural rock group performing behind Bob Boilen‘s desk in a concert that was originally published on November 10th, 2010.

As the global pandemic continues, the well of Tiny Desk Concerts has gone anything but dry as the NPR team comes up with innovative solutions like the new Tiny Desk (Home) Concerts as well as archival videos. With these releases from the vaults, viewers are able to see the evolution the concert program has undergone.

The year 2010 found Los Lobos releasing their 14th album, Tin Can Trust, which is heavily featured throughout the three-song performance, including the opening number “Burn It Down”. Without any chitchat or fanfare, the sextet dives into the song’s layered introduction as the acoustic instruments create a chorus. The next song, “Yo Canto”, finds an electric guitar brought to the forefront which gives it some added flavor. “Yo Canto” is introduced as a “cumbia,” which is a genre of folklore and dance native to Colombia and Panama.

Finally, the session comes to a close with a throwback to the group’s 1984 sophomore album, How Will the Wolf Survive?, with “Don’t Worry Baby”. In light of the two more recent tunes that preceded it, “Don’t Worry Baby” shows the evolution of the group that would rise to prominence throughout the tail end of the 20th century. Since this taping Los Lobos has released two more studio albums, 2015’s Gates of Gold and the 2019 Christmas album Llegó Navidad.
