The Flaming Lips Share ‘Mother Please Don’t Be Sad’ Video

The Flaming Lips shared the video for new single, “Mother Please Don’t Be Sad.” The song will appear on the psychedelic rockers’ forthcoming album, American Head, which comes out via Warner Records on September 11.

“Mother Please Don’t Be Sad” follows previous American Head singles and videos for “Will You Return When/When You Come Down,” “You N’ Me Sellin Weed,” “Dinosaurs On The Mountain” and “My Religion Is You.” Lips frontman Wayne Coyne’s experience of being held at gunpoint when he worked at a Long John Silver’s as a young man inspired “Mother Please Don’t Be Sad.” Naturally, the ordeal altered Coyne’s perspective on life, as he told Rolling Stone.

“Well, until then, I could probably say I didn’t realize I was really alive,” he said. “I never really thought about it. We were living such an insane, healthy, wonderful, happy life — my brothers and all of our friends just running around doing the craziest shit ever. But then I’m laying on the floor thinking: ‘This is how I’m going to die.’”

The experience also solidified Coyne’s resolve that music was the right path for him and that his family would support him in that endeavor.

“After this robbery, for a little while, I just thought, ‘It doesn’t matter. They don’t care. They want me to do music,’” he remembered. “So, I think it helped me in that way — to not feel like I had abandoned these things that my father had worked for. So, I have to say, I think it was probably the greatest gift a young person could have — to suddenly get a new perspective on what’s important in your life.”

Coyne also added that the title of the album, despite its perceived political undertones, is more about being in a band than politics. “I think Flaming Lips music, when it’s at its best — it’s something deeper than Donald Trump.”
