August made its debut at the fifth documented Umphrey’s McGee concert in their hometown of South Bend, Indiana. Written by guitarist Brendan Bayliss, “August” has remained a staple of the band’s live performances ever since, appearing on 385 confirmed UM setlists. Featuring the band’s original drummer, the late Mike Mirro, this footage comes from a gig on June 19, 2002 at Little Brother’s in Columbus, Ohio featuring a +20 version of “August” to open the second set.

Of the 385 times Umphrey’s McGee has played “August” live, only 28 occurred in the month the song is named after. One such synchronistic instance was at the band’s August 7, 2004 concert at The Skyline Stage at Navy Pier in their second home of Chicago. The evening began with Bayliss and guitarist Jake Cinninger on acoustic guitars for the entire first set. The versatility of “August” does not stop with its often acoustic arrangement and its launching many memorable improvisations. UM will place “August” just about anywhere in a setlist, including filling the role of set opener, as seen in the first video, and set-closer, as seen in this video, which comes from the second set of their show at The Pageant in St. Louis on September 2, 2017.

If Chicago is the band’s second home, then Three Sisters Park in Chillicothe, Illinois is UM’s third home. The site of the annual Summer Camp Music festival every Memorial Day weekend for the past 20 years (except this year due to COVID-19), Three Sisters Park is listed on the Umphrey’s setlist database website All Things Umphrey’s as the group’s most-played venue with 53 individual performances. This footage from 2018 features “August” as the penultimate song of the second set.
