Widespread Panic are going big to end this month’s run of old school concerts for their Never Miss A Sunday Show live archival video series. Official video of the band’s historic New Year’s Eve 2001 concert at Atlanta’s Philips Arena premieres this Sunday, August 30 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on the JamBase Livestreams Calendar powered by nugs.tv.
Panic’s December 31, 2001 performance was one for the ages and was featured in JamBase’s 20 For 20 list of memorable New Year’s Eve concerts. The three-set affair began with a set from brute., a collaboration between Widespread Panic and Vic Chesnutt. brute. played songs from the side project’s debut studio album, Nine High A Pallet, as well as Chesnutt songs WSP had covered in the past and tunes from Co-Balt, an album that would be released months later. Chesnutt’s appearance was just his second with Panic and one of five guest spots before Vic died in 2009.
The sextet delivered a career-spanning second set and then went heavy on the jams in set three. Panic reeled off one classic after another including “Porch Song,” “Tall Boy” and “Greta.” Next, the band played their recently debuted cover of “All Along The Watchtower,” which they worked into the beloved “Arleen.” Hunter Williams and Roy Wooten were both on percussion for the evening’s “Drums” segment before WSP fit “Disco” within “Driving Song.” The marathon concert ended with an encore consisting of “Visiting Day” and “Space Wrangler.”
Widespread Panic picked concerts spanning the old school years of 1994 – 2002 for each August installment of Never Miss A Sunday Show. The band’s lineup at the time featured guitarists John Bell and Michael Houser, percussionist Domingo “Sunny” Ortiz, drummer Todd Nance and keyboardist JoJo Hermann. Sadly, Nance passed away last week.
