Fan-favorite New Orleans radio station WWOZ (90.7 FM) helped music fans get through a Jazz Fest-less spring with “Jazz Festing In Place,” a series of archival live sets from past editions of the renowned New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival broadcast during the initially scheduled 2020 edition of the event in late April and early May.
Now, as we mark the end of this music-light summer, WWOZ is preparing for another extended Jazz Fest homage, “Festing In Place: The Next Fest Thing,” set to run for seven days from September 4th–7th and September 11th–13th.
As the widespread cancellation of 2020 concert events began this spring, organizers of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival announced a postponement to an unspecified date in the fall. The 2020 edition of the fest was later canceled outright as the full scope of the pandemic’s disruption of the entertainment industry came into focus. “The Next Fest Thing” serves to mark the occasion of the postponed Fest that almost was with another week of memorable live sets.
According to the “Festing In Place: The Next Fest Thing” announcement, the new series “will include performances from New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, French Quarter Fest, Satchmo SummerFest, Crescent City Blues and BBQ Fest, WWOZ Studios, and New Orleans clubs, plus rare performances from other historic collections.”
Produced in cooperation with the Archive of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, the weeklong broadcast will also include “interview segments highlighting the music, food, and heritage of New Orleans and Louisiana to give the feeling of a wide-reaching cultural festival.
“Festing In Place: The Next Fest Thing” will feature archival sets by Allen Toussaint, The Meters, Dr. John, Neville Brothers, Louis Armstrong Jimmy Buffett, Trombone Shorty, Allman Brothers Band, Irma Thomas, Aaron Neville (gospel set), Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Henry Butler, Ella Fitzgerald w/ Stevie Wonder, Toots & The Maytals, Anders Osborne, Terence Blanchard, Parliament Funkadelic, Walter Wolfman Washington, The Revivalists, Ernie K-Doe, Marc Broussard, Freddie King, Dumpstaphunk, Cyril Neville, Tank and the Bangas, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Samantha Fish, Radiators, and many more.
