Billy Strings Begins Meet Me At The Drive-In Tour In Pennsylvania

83

Billy Strings began his Meet Me At The Drive-In Tour on Friday. Billy and the band delivered the first of three socially distanced concerts outside the Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania.

Strings, with freshly cropped hair, got things going with an instrumental version of the gospel classic “Amazing Grace” before getting into his own classic, “Dust In A Baggie,” which saw a tasty solo from mandolinist Jarrod Walker. Flatt & Scruggs’ “Doin’ My Time” came next ahead of a “The Likes Of Me” (Jimmy Reed), “Pyramid Country”, which saw a “Day Tripper” (The Beatles) tease, “Ol Slewfoot” segment. The latter — a Jimmy Horton-popularized tune the Grateful Dead used to play, appropriately about a bear — saw Billy wishing some folks a happy birthday. “Love Like Me,” from Strings’ 2019 album Home, came next before the band got back into some cover material with “Tennessee Stud” by the legendary Jimmy Driftwood and The Stanley Brothers’ “Nobody’s Love Is Like Mine.” Billy’s own “Long Forgotten Dream” and “Away From The Mire” closed out the first frame.

Billy and company kicked off the second set with some dreamy jamming featuring Strings throwing on some phase before banjoist Billy Failing kicked off a massive “Home Of The Red Fox.” The Bill Emerson instrumental had a little bit of everything including a wild plunky section laced with bass from Royal Masat as well as a “Scarlett Begonias” tease. “Must Be Seven” and Blackfoot’s “Train, Train” came ahead of Tom Petty’s “Time To Move On.” The second set train motif continued with “Slow Train” followed by a cover of Widespread Panic’s “All Time Low.” Gordon Lightfoot’s “10 Degrees & Getting Colder” prefaced set closer “Turmoil & Tinfoil,” which capped off the train trifecta with a “Reuben’s Train” tease. Billy and the band would retake the stage to bring the parking lot down with “How Moutain Girls Can Love.”
