Daptone Records will issue a new Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings album of covers, Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Rendition Was In), on October 23. The label shared a recording of Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours,” one of five previously unreleased tracks on the upcoming release.
Renowned vocalist Sharon Jones was just 60-years-old when she died in 2016 after undergoing several years of pancreatic cancer treatments. The 13-track Just Dropped In… is culled from recordings made over the course of Jones’ 20+ year career.
The collection contains tracks originally made for tribute albums, including Dusty Springfield’s “Little by Little,” Shuggie Otis’ “Inspiration Information,” The Marvelettes’ “Here I Am Baby” and Prince’s “Take Me With U.” According to the press release, the cover of Gladys Knight’s “Giving Up” was “specifically requested but unused by a producer who was confident he needed it to sample for a beat on a Dr. Dre album,” while their cover of Kenny Rogers’ First Edition’s “Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)” was “a near replay of Bettye Lavette’s 1968 version, and was notably the very first recording done at the Daptone House of Soul studio in 2002.”
Additionally, “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours” was intended to be used in a television commercial and Bad Medicine’s “Trespasser” was requested by Hank Shockley for the American Gangster soundtrack. The tracks “Rescue Me” and “In the Bush” were recorded but not used on The Wolf of Wall Street soundtrack.
There are also covers of Janet Jackson’s “What Have You Done for Me Lately,” Bob Marley’s & The Wailers’ “It Hurts to be Alone” and Woody Gutherie’s “This Land Is Your Land.”
