Seahawks: Island Visions
I apologize, appears I took the month of August off. Dog days, amirite? Actually, forget about the dogs, this week’s back-to-business set is all about the birds, so prepare to fly away with these four rec-worth new ones. First up into the sky is Island Visions, the newest from the UK duo Seahawks. This one is a perfect end-of-summer chillax’er, ambient electrogrooves that are just trippy enough to get your daydreaming about sunshine, warmth and carefree living. If you’re looking to get up off of the ground, this one will take you there, no doubt.
GoGo Penguin: GoGo Penguin
Sticking to the UK, but coming back to the ground, we’ve got our next big bird, GoGo Penguin. Now, I hope you’re already familiar with this piano trio, but if you’ve somehow missed their first four phenomenal albums, getting on board for their fifth, but self-titled, masterpiece is as good a place to start as any. Combining the spirit of electronic music with adventurous jazz motifs and a distinctive sound, these guys are anything but flightless. As their fanbase and popularity has grown, their music has only gotten better along the way and they’re as good as ever here, confident, sharp, but still bringing the goods like no other. This is maybe the premier “jazz” group out there right now, a groovy elegance you won’t find anywhere else … if you haven’t heard this one yet, a must-listen. Enjoy!
Fly Golden Eagle: Leprechauns’ Milk
https://flygoldeneagle.bandcamp.com/album/leprechauns-milk
Coming back stateside (and boy are my wings tired!) we soar into Nashville and check in on Fly Golden Eagle, another one of those bands I hope are on people’s radar, but you never can be sure. It’s been a while since they’ve come out with new music, but they made it count with Leprechauns’ Milk, out earlier this spring. Damn, a pastiche of great rock influences, from psychedelic to glam to groove, this one flaps and soars and chicken-struts around. Every track is a delight of the everyone-should-love-this variety. Highly recommended if this one has not crossed your ears yet.
Maybird: Bird Sides
https://maybirdband.bandcamp.com/album/bird-sides-ep
Finally, we’ve got the appropriately-titled Bird Sides, an EP from Rochester rockers Maybird that came out this summer. The album name is a play on B-sides, as the six tracks here are leftovers and alternate takes, the kind of cool stuff we’re seeing a lot of from bands over the pandemic, as basement tapes and stuff they’ve been sitting on are making it into the light. And thank goodness for that, because as far as these tracks are concerned, they’re freakin’ awesome … and a great little slice of Maybird’s eclectic, addictive je ne sais quoi. Muscular rock and roll banging around on really great songs, if these are the ones that don’t make the cut, well, there’s more where these came from. Check ‘em out, I think you’ll dig. Take flight, my friends, more of the good stuff next week.
