Goose kicked off their socially distanced run at the Yarmouth Drive-In on Cape Cod in Massachusetts on Friday. The Connecticut-based band delivered two sets of originals with some choice covers peppered in for their first live in person show since March.
Goose — once again joined by Jeffrey Avevalo on percussion — got the show underway with one of those choice covers, “Howard Johnson’s Got His Ho-Jo Working” by NRBQ. The song saw Trevor Weekz taking the bassline for a walk ahead of keyboardist/guitarist Peter Anspach on a clav solo leading into a brief blast off from guitarist Rick Mitarotonda before closing out the opening number. Next, the band got into original material with “Turned Clouds,” the opening track on their 2016 debut album, Moon Cabin, and didn’t waste much time sliding into the shuffle of “Jive I.” The song saw Anspach building the song up with some organ before the band brought it back down so Mitarotonda could get to work with drummer Ben Atkind and Arevalo floating along underneath him. Rick cycled through some effects and whipped the song back up into a frenzy to put an exclamation point on the number.
The band then dropped into the driving, funky “Jive Lee,” which saw Goose showing off some serious groove skills. A cover of Father John Misty’s “Well, You Can Do It Without Me” from Josh Tillman’s debut album under the Misty moniker, 2012’s Fear Fun came next. “Time To Flee” then prefaced the set closer, “Arrow.” “Wysteria Lane” launched the second set and led “Into The Myst.” The Sergio Mendes classic “Mas Que Nada” followed ahead of the original “Indian River.” The band then got into some Grateful Dead with “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo.” Goose would close out the evening with the original “Yeti.”
