Happy Birthday Trey Anastasio: Watch 5 Trey Anastasio Band Festival Performances

99

Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio was born in Fort Worth, Texas on this date in 1964. Anastasio grew up in Princeton, New Jersey and first took up drums as a toddler before moving over to guitar as a teenager. He attended the University of Vermont in Burlington, where he formed Phish in 1983. The band went on to become one of the top-drawing live acts in the U.S. known for their marathon performances, huge repertoire and improvisational abilities.

Trey has always been incredibly prolific and in 1999 formed a solo group, the Trey Anastasio Band. TAB started as a trio and the lineup has expanded and contracted a number of times over the years, but just like Phish is still active decades after the band was formed.

Anastasio’s last tour before the pandemic was a 12-show Trey Anastasio Band run that began on January 10, 2020 and concluded on February 1, 2020. Highlights from the tour were recently released as the live album Burn It Down. TAB, like Phish, had a number of dates scheduled that were postponed due to the pandemic. Here’s hoping both bands will return to the stage sooner rather than later.

While the JamBase Live Video Archive (JBLVA) contains nearly 4,000 Phish videos, there’s also over 100 Trey Anastasio Band videos for your viewing enjoyment. Celebrate Trey’s birthday by watching five TAB festival appearances spanning 20022019.

June 23, 2002 | Bonnaroo

The Trey Anastasio Band brought the action on the main stage at the inaugural Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival to a close on June 23, 2002. Anastasio’s Bonnaroo debut was the last performance of a 25-concert TAB summer tour and included two sets. The guitarist’s band at the time saw him backed by Dave Grippo, Peter Apfelbaum, Jennifer Hartswick, Russ Lawton, Russ Lawton, Tony Markellis, Ray Paczkowski, Cyro Baptista and Andy Moroz.

The video above begins towards the end of “Money Love & Change” and then features the rest of TAB’s two-set performance. Highlights include an exploratory “Sand,” delicate “Drifting,” adventurous “Night Speaks To A Woman” and bombastic “Mr. Completely.” Yet, the evening may be best remembered for a speech Anastasio gave about the state of music when he emerged to start his encore with acoustic renditions of Phish classics “Wilson” and “Bathtub Gin” before the rest of TAB emerges for the “Alive Again” finale.

July 7, 2018 | Levitate Festival

A variation of the Trey Anastasio Band dubbed the “Trey Anastasio Trio” performed at the Levitate Music & Arts Festival on July 7, 2018. The change was made after TAB keyboardist Ray Paczkowski underwent brain surgery. Thankfully, Paczkowski recovered in time to join Anastasio, drummer Russ Lawton and bassist Tony Markellis at the festival in Marshfield, Massachusetts. Standout moments included a well-jammed “Everything’s Right,” funky “Undermind” and high-octane “Push On ‘Til The Day.” Anastasio went solo acoustic for “Waste” and “More” to start the encore.

A Life Beyond The Dream with Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi August 23, 2019 | LOCKN’ Festival

Trey swapped collaborations with Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi at the 2019 LOCKN’ Festival in Arrington, Virginia. First, the Trey Anastasio Band was joined by Derek for their second set and encore on August 23 with Susan adding to a pair of songs as well. Then, the Tedeschi Trucks Band welcomed Anastasio to share the stage on August 24 for a complete performance of Derek & The Dominos’ Layla LP.

“Set Your Soul Free” opened the group’s second set and began the collaboration with Derek. Trucks also added to “Everything’s Right” followed by renditions of Phish classics “Camel Walk,” “Ghost” and “Blaze On.” Next up was “Dark & Down” and “Sand” before Tedeschi emerged to duet on “A Life Beyond The Dream” and “Rise/Come Together.” Derek and Trey kicked off the encore with acoustic versions of “Brief Time” and “More” and then the rest of TAB returned for the pairing of “46 Days” and “First Tube” that closed out the performance. Video of “A Life Beyond The Dream” featuring TAB joined by Derek and Susan can be viewed above.
