Phish Performs ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ Vocal Jam On Fall Tour 1999

105

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Phish’s historic Fall Tour 1995. In recognition of that noteworthy tour and to make up for the lack of shows this fall, JamBase presents a daily retrospective highlighting a noteworthy moment from a Phish fall tour concert that took place on that date over the past 25. The 25 Years Of Phish Fall Tour series runs each day between the start of Phish Fall Tour 1995 on September 27 through that tour’s finale on December 17.

In the past 25 years, Phish has played two shows on September 28, once in San Diego in 1995 and once in Pelham, Alabama in 1999.

Phish’s Fall Tour 1999 visit to Pelham’s Oak Mountain Amphitheatre was their second show held at the outdoor venue and the 14th show of the tour. Their return for the first time since October 1994 was noted from the stage by guitarist Trey Anastasio who also called the venue one of the band’s “favorites” and stated, “they were having an even better time this time.”

Phish Kicks Off Fall Tour 1995 On This Date

Phish debuted five songs on this date in 1995 at their fall tour opener in Sacramento, including the instrumental “Keyboard Army.”

The first set featured the tour debut of “Sneakin’ Sally Through The Alley,” while set two was marked by notable versions of “Farmhouse,” “Tweezer” and “Makisupa Policeman” (keyword: “schwag”).

The most memorable moment of the night occurred during the set-closing performance of the Phish classic “You Enjoy Myself.” Though it was just their second concert held at Oak Mountain, it was Phish’s fifth show in the state of Alabama, having played Tuscaloosa in May and again at a different Tuscaloosa venue in November 1991, and once more in Birmingham in May 1994. In a nod to the locale, the “You Enjoy Myself” vocal jam coda landed on a few bars of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s southern anthem “Sweet Home Alabama.”

Listen to the “Sweet Home Alabama” tease inside the “You Enjoy Myself” vocal jam from Phish’s Fall Tour 1999 show on this date below:
