A new John Prine box set, Crooked Piece of Time, will put a spotlight on the early days of the late singer-songwriter’s career, specifically his time recording on the Atlantic Records and Asylum Records imprints from 1971–1980—the first seven records of what would go on to be an illustrious, decades-long career. Crooked Piece of Time, named after the Bruised Oranges track, will arrive on October 23rd via Rhino.
The box set will start at the beginning of Prine’s musical journey with his iconic, self-titled 1971 and include Diamonds In The Rough (1972), Sweet Revenge (1973), Common Sense (1975), Bruised Orange (1978), Pink Cadillac (1979) and Storm Windows (1980) After that point, Prine went on to form his own label, Oh Boy Records, with which he would release the remainder of his albums until his death in early 2020.
According to the Crooked Piece of Time product description on the Rhino website,
This 7CD boxed set comes in a clamshell box and includes mini-LP replica sleeves, poster inserts and a 20-page booklet featuring new liner notes by acclaimed music journalist David Fricke. The cover painting by artist Joshua Petker, based on a photo by Jim Shea, was specially commissioned for this release.

John Prine was recently honored posthumously as the state of Illinois’ first-ever poet laureate. As Illinois Governor JB Pritzker said along with the appointment, Prine left behind “an unparalleled musical legacy and was beloved by family and millions of friends who hope that in Heaven he finds that Paradise waitin’ just as he longed for.”
