The String Cheese Incident have released a pro-shot video highlighting their cover of Little Feat‘s “Spanish Moon” from Phases of the Moon Music & Art Festival back in 2014. The September 12th, 2014 concert was aired in full as part of SCI’s Friday Night Cheese webcast series over the weekend
This rendition of the Feats Don’t Fail Me Now classic featured Little Feat’s Bill Payne on keys beside Kyle Hollingsworth, as well as a space-bound Vince Herman on lead vocals and Sunshine Garcia backing him up. Phases of the Moon was a one-off festival that took place at Kennekuk County Park in Danville, IL September 11th–14th, 2014.

The String Cheese Incident’s second set on September 12th was filled with highlights, special guests, and moon-related wordplay. Yet this “Spanish Moon” sticks out among the rest not only for the presence of original Little Feat member Bill Payne, but also for the onstage antics of psychonaut Vince Herman. Decked out in a Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat style wrap and donning a space helmet, Herman blasts this choice cover off from the very start.
Then of course there is the actual performance itself, bolstered by the dual keyboard action of Payne and Hollingsworth. The organ-driven jam was also complemented by Bill Nershi‘s slide guitar work and interplay with Michael Kang. All around, the improvisational energy was a perfect match for the onstage kookiness delivered by Herman.
