Phish lyricist Tom Marshall and co-host RJ Bee offer a deep dive into “Leaves” for a bonus episode of Under The Scales, an Osiris Media podcast. The quartet released a studio version of “Leaves” on their 2020 studio album, Sigma Oasis.
Tom Marshall wrote “Leaves” with Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio during sessions held in March 2017 on the Jersey Shore. Phish debuted the track live on July 14, 2017.
Bee shares his interpretation of the “Leaves” lyrics before Marshall dug in. Tom revealed the words to the song include portions of two poems he wrote. Both co-hosts then spoke of their appreciation for the studio version featuring strings arranged by Don Hart and feel its inclusion on Sigma Oasis may foreshadow its return to the stage, as Phish last performed “Leaves” live on September 3, 2017. Marshall went on to discuss the history of the song and changes made from his original poem.
The episode continues with a portion of the original recording Trey and Tom made for “Leaves.” Marshall noted the Sigma Oasis version was “way beyond his wild expectations” and that he was “overjoyed” when he first heard the studio take, while Bee spoke of how he feels the song is inspired by David Bowie.
