A giant six-metre statue of Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat has been airlifted into Bondi Beach, marking the release of the filmmaker’s new Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.
The sculpture was unveiled yesterday as part of a press conference that also included a remote appearance by Cohen in character as the Kazakhstan journalist and a parade of scantily-clad Borat doppelgängers wearing “face mask mankinis”, naturally.
The statue will be on display at Marks Park in Bondi until 11am this morning – better be quick if you want to catch it. Otherwise, check out some snaps of the monument and its unveiling below.
Borat Subsequent Movefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan is out globally today via Amazon Prime Video.
The film, a sequel to 2006’s Borat, was one of the first films made following the easing of coronavirus-related shutdown restrictions. Cohen and his team filmed the movie with a minimal crew in the US and internationally.
A trailer dropped earlier this month, showing the Kazakhstan troublemaker return to the States in order to present his daughter to Vice President Mike Pence.
The film looks to be another chaotic skewering of the United States and its mores – particularly during an election year in the middle of a pandemic.
